GCORR’S 2016-2023 Quadrennial Report

No one person is equipped to dismantle racism, tribalism, or xenophobia. Fortunately, the gospel of Matthew reminds each of us that “with God, all things are possible.” Since the start of our denomination in 1968, the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) has been equipping conferences, jurisdictions, churches, pastors, and laity with teaching resources, training courses, targeted programs, and specific tools to right systemic harms and chart a new path forward. Normally this quadrennial report would have been produced in 2020— documenting GCORR’s work over the previous four years leading up to the General Conference. That’s why we’re calling this document the Quad+ as it highlights how our agency has resourced the Church over the past six+ years. As you read this report, celebrate the progress, anticipate the way forward, but also recognize the critical work needed right here, right now. This is where GCORR does its best God-inspired, Holy Spirit-driven work. Our practical resources are so easily accessible, ready to be used immediately by anyone seeking to embrace cultural diversity and dismantle systemic racism.

Vision, Mission, & Values

GCORR will not rest in its work of challenging and equipping the church to complete its unfinished agenda of dismantling racial discrimination. We continue to do this by championing diversity, equity, and inclusion; developing interculturally competent leaders; and catalyzing authentic community. While racism remains our primary focus, our perspective and partnerships reflect a broader context, which includes poverty, nationalism, tribal conflicts, gender discrimination, homophobia, disability, and generational bias— because we know all forms of oppression are connected, and they cannot be dismantled in isolation.

5 Decades of Advocating for Equity & Inclusion

GCORR was created to address institutional racism, engage in new conversations about what a truly desegregated and global church could look like, and chart a course for living out the Gospel in a more authentic and inclusive way. The Commission continues to answer God’s call to serve in these areas as well as responding to a world that is far different than when the agency was first created.

GCORR Ministry Highlights

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Financial Reality

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.

Conclusion

Because we love Jesus, we must not allow ourselves to be silenced for justice and equity. The Church has benefited from centering whiteness as the norm by which we operate and has fallen into a place of “othering” versus embracing and welcoming. There is crying out today in our communities for the United Methodist Church to be led by anti-racist disciples who are willing to disrupt the status quo. GCORR has worked hard to be a welcoming, supportive place where BIPOC people and their white allies can come together and equip one another to be leaders in the Church. We are committed to being the anti-tribal, anti-racism support system our denomination needs—and becoming ever more faithful to our global calling. We’re dedicated to finding new ways of engaging more and younger voices of leadership and to honoring the cultural differences and contexts in which the work of anti-racism is conducted. Let’s meet up at the crossroads and walk this path together, making each other better and more faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
